A Kalahari safari in Botswana at Motswiri includes game drives, Rhino tracking and Giraffe stalking, horse riding / quad bike trails and authentic Bushmen interaction in a number of special experiences.
Bushmen cultural activities
Motswiri Lodge has created unique opportunities for guests to enjoy quality Bushmen interaction on a Kalahari safari in Botswana. These are not commercial demonstrations performed by rote but specially arranged with and carried out by some of the few Bushmen still living their traditional lifestyle, deep in the Kalahari near Kanana.
Advance notice is required and the Transdance in particular can only be organised if conditions are optimal. Special activities are arranged through a unique community member with Bushman heritage. Ada Hardbattle speaks the Bushman language fluently and accompanies guests on their interactions, sharing her knowledge and understanding along the way.
- A walk in the Kalahari with Bushmen guides. Ada will accompany the group. Signs of the wild and the nutritional / medicinal uses of the various plants, shrubs, roots and insects, will be explained and can be experienced.
- The bushman evening of dance This takes place in the early evening round the fire and exhorts the gods for the rains and successful hunting
- Bushman village visit This requires a 90 minute drive which will take guests across Kanana Wilderness to the Groot Laagte village. This is one of the permanent settlements developed by the Botswana Government.
- The Transdance
- This special dance is very difficult to witness as it needs a “Doctor” to lead and is not normally done with spectators. The duration can be anything from 3 hours to all night, dependant on the “Gods”. N.B. This evening requires a minimum of 2 weeks notice and a commitment from the audience to behave in a quiet and respectful manner.
